In an increasingly interconnected world, global challenges such as climate change, pollution and social inequalities demand urgent and systemic responses. Traditional approaches are no longer sufficient and innovative and sustainable alternatives must be at the centre. This is where the Transformative Innovation Labs (TRAIN Labs) come in, offering a dynamic space for co-design and co-creation to foster innovative solutions to the challenges of the blue economy.

THE ROLE OF TRAIN Labs IN THE BLUE ECONOMY
The Blue Economy—which includes sectors such as marine biotechnology, aquaculture, coastal tourism, and maritime transport—plays a crucial role in global sustainability efforts. TRAIN Labs drive innovation by:
- Co-Design and Co-Creation: TRAIN Labs leverage design thinking methodologies to create practical solutions for local and regional challenges. This involves understanding the needs of all parties, ideating solutions, prototyping innovations, and iterating based on real-world testing that contribute to sustainable ocean and coastal management.
- Managing complex challenges: Addressing systemic issues like marine pollution, overfishing, and climate adaptation through integrated, multidisciplinary approaches.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Bringing together different stakeholders (industry, government, academia, civil society, and environmental organizations) to align on common goals without predefined rigid objectives
Projects like Blue Ecosystem are paving the way for a Mediterranean-wide approach to the Blue Economy. They intend to strengthen governance and policy innovation, integrate regional strategies with EU sustainability goals and facilitate knowledge-sharing between Mediterranean regions.
