The BLUE ECOSYSTEM project as facilitator for achieving the EU Mission “Restoring our oceans and waters”

20/09/2024

The context

The “Forum Mondial de la Mer”, organized by “La Saison Bleue” in collaboration the Blue Mission Med project, was held last 12 and 13 September 2024 in Bizerte (Tunisia). BLUE ECOSYSTEM’s project partners HCMR and CPMR had the opportunity to present the project activities and to align the works in a coordinated manner to achieve a sustainable blue economy in the Mediterranean.

The importance of regional and local territorial levels

One of the key points raised by the European Commission during the event was the importance of improving existing communication channels and building new ones with the regions and local communities to achieve the implementation of the EU Mission “Mission Restore our Ocean and Waters”. In fact, the BLUE ECOSYSTEM project will be essential to driving regional engagement through the regional workshops and activities and ensuring the amplification of EU Mission impacts.

Exploring collaboration opportunities with the EU Mission

The BLUE ECOSYSTEM project can contribute to disseminating Mission Objectives at the regional and local levels and aligning efforts with the Mission Implementation Roadmap:

  • Promoting Mission-Oriented R&I Strategies

It encourages the adoption of mission-oriented research and innovation (R&I) strategies at regional and local levels, ensuring that regional stakeholders are aligned with the broader objectives of the Mission.

  • Disseminating Mission objectives locally

By engaging local and regional actors, it will play a pivotal role in spreading awareness of the Mission Objectives, ensuring that communities and decision-makers understand and support the Mission’s goals.

  • Aligning Regional Plans with the Mission Roadmap

It will ensure that the proposed regional development plans and actions are fully aligned with the Mission Implementation Roadmap, maximizing the effectiveness and impact of both local and mission-driven efforts.

  • Facilitating Territorial Co-design

Through territorial co-design activities, it will empower regions to take part in defining the Transformative Portfolio of Missions, tailoring interventions to local needs while maintaining alignment with overarching Mission goals.

  • Supporting Collaborative Networks

It will foster collaboration between regional stakeholders, research institutions, and policymakers, enabling the co-creation of strategies that contribute to both regional development and the Mission’s objectives.

  • Maximizes Impact Through Strategic Alignment

By coordinating activities across regions and aligning them with the Mission’s goals, the BLUE ECOSYSTEM will ensure that each effort contributes to the overall success, securing maximum results and efficiency.

All in all, the “Forum Mondial de la Mer” gave the opportunity to network, but also to inspire the activities in the project, such the panel discussions on the challenges and innovative solutions of the blue economy sectors, which are linked to the WP1.
